Tomorrow · Day 1 · Sat 8/22 · brief sent Fri 7:15 pm

What's in store:
wheels up.

Tomorrow we wake up in California and fall asleep to the sound of the Pacific. Here's the whole day, from alarm to aloha.

The sky report

Sunny, breezy, classic August

29°CKaanapali
UV 11extreme
~6:49psunset
19 km/htrades
Ocean check: calm morning on the west side, light afternoon chop. Wadeable for us tomorrow: yes. Feet-wet friendly at Kaanapali Beach before sunset.
Wear: Light layers for the plane. On landing: sandals out, sunscreen on before the first beachwalk.
Snorkel report: Kapalua 8 · Nāpili 8 · Black Rock 7 · south shore 6 ~ live scores each morning
Deeper dive: the NWS Maui point forecast, the one locals swear by over mainland weather apps.
The game plan

Fly, land, stock up, settle in, watch the sky

A travel day with exactly three fixed points: the flight, 4 PM check-in, and the sun going down. Everything between them flows. No clocks, no rushing. Sunscreen goes on before the first beach walk; island sun outranks home sun by a lot.

The side quests · Day 1

One tiny side quest each

Day-one warm-up round. Know your quest before we land.

Nānā ka maka; hoʻolohe ka pepeiao. Let the eyes observe; let the ears listen. The quests exist for exactly one reason: to make us more present. Noticing this island’s colors, sounds, tastes, and people, instead of scrolling past them.

Avani

Find and taste the group's first shave ice or Dole Whip before sunset. Rate it out of 10.

Meet

Learn one staff member's name, and one thing they love about Maui.

Pranav

Photograph your first “only in Hawaii” thing after landing. One shot, best shot.

Richa

Gecko hunt: find the trip’s first gecko. They’re everywhere once you start looking. Photo is proof.

At dinner we share what we found and live the day twice. No points, no scores, no winners. Being present was the whole point.

The Hawaiian word · Day 1
Aloha
ah · LO · ha

More than hello. Often translated as alo, presence, and hā, breath: the shared breath of life. Say it like you mean it; here, people do.

“Aloha! We just checked in, and yes, we already love it here.”

house rule: everyone uses it at least once tomorrow

SHOP

Costco Kahului: the classic first stop

5 minutes from the airport. One cart, fifteen minutes, and the whole week gets cheaper and easier. Both lists below are tappable; open them in the aisle and check things off as the cart fills:

bring the Costco cardcash back: small bills for fruit stands
The essentials (tap to check off)
  • ✓Water flat + two big reusable jugs for the car
  • ✓Reef-safe mineral sunscreen ×2 (Hawaii law allows only the mineral kind; it sells in multipacks here)
  • ✓Mosquito repellent: the Hāna botanical garden is famous for eating unprepared visitors alive
  • ✓Aloe or after-sun, because day one always wins
  • ✓Flotation belts ×4 (snorkel sets already delivered and packed)
  • ✓Snack cooler: trail mix, fruit, PB pretzels, jerky for Richa. Storm-day rations now, Hāna cooler Friday
  • ✓Room breakfast basics: coffee, pastries, yogurt cups
  • ✓Cash back at the register: small bills for fruit stands
Hawaii-only finds (tap to check off)
  • ✓The poke bar: a Hawaii Costco legend, fresh and absurdly priced. Richa’s first souvenir
  • ✓Maui Gold pineapple + apple bananas (small, tangy, better)
  • ✓Maui onion potato chips (Kitch’n Cook’d): the island’s snack
  • ✓Li hing mui anything: gummies, mango, the works. Trust the process
  • ✓Macadamia nuts: buy two, one will not survive the week
  • ✓POG juice or a Hawaiian Sun can flat
  • ✓Punaluʻu sweetbread if it’s in stock
  • ✓Kona coffee for future sad mainland mornings
  • ✓Whatever else looks local and delicious. This list is a floor, not a ceiling

Flotation belts/noodles are for pool + calm-water days. Cheap here, silly-priced at the resort.

VIEW

Kāʻanapali Beachwalk

The paved path runs the whole beach, right from the Westin. Stroll north toward Whalers Village, and tonight the timing is perfect: the free Polynesian hula show runs 7 to 8 PM at Center Stage on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, and today is Saturday. Dinner-adjacent culture, zero dollars.

just before sunset
SHOW

Black Rock cliff-dive ceremony

At Puʻu Kekaʻa (Black Rock), the lava point at the far north end of the beachwalk fronting the Sheraton, about 20 minutes on foot from the Westin: a torch-lighting run along the cliff and a dive from the rock at sunset, a nightly tribute to Chief Kahekili. Free, and unforgettable first-night material.

BEACH

First snorkel, why wait

The gear's already here and Sunday's storm makes this evening the week's first calm window, so we use it. Where: the sandy stretch directly out front, between the Westin and Whalers Village (not at Black Rock itself; that end has depth and current). Belts on, masks on, buddy pairs, waist-deep, feet able to touch at all times. Twenty minutes of faces in the water on day one and the trip is officially amphibious.

REST

Lights out, early tonight

Jet lag will be on our side: 9:30 on Maui feels like 12:30 AM to our bodies. Use it. Sunday the island shows off.

Sunday: the storm show. A named guest crashes the weekend, so Sunday goes indoors on purpose. Saturday evening’s brief brings the wet-day menu; the Hāna road waits for Friday.
